The 37th National Farmers Day Celebration was observed by the Adentan Municipal Assembly (ADMA) at the Fafraha Community Senior High School (FACOSH) on Friday 3rd December 2021. The event was organized by ADMA to acknowledge farmers within the municipality and celebrate them for their immense effort to reduce food scarcity, unemployment and promote sustainable living.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. Daniel Alexander Nii-Noi Adumuah encouraged the farmers to keep up with their good work after he inspected farm products assembled by farmers together with the Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD) Mrs. Jemima Tsina Apedo, the Presiding Member (PM) Hon. Joseph Odai-Boye and some dignitaries who adorned the occasion. He stated that, the agriculture sector accounts for one-fifth of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and within the agriculture sector, food and tree crops forms about seventy percent (70%) of agriculture products contributing to the GDP whiles livestock and fish farming forms twenty percent (20%). The rest ten percent (10%) goes to Cocoa production which is the biggest cash crop that supports the economy. Also, much effort is expected of farmers to make enough food available since the theme for the year talks about planting for food and jobs-consolidating food system in Ghana.
Seventy-one (71) years old Mr. Martin Afenyo, the brain behind hybrid and water yam was adjudged the overall best farmer of the Adentan Municipality. He produces about forty-five thousand (45000) bags of mushroom monthly, trained about fifty-three (53) people in cultivation of oyster mushroom, produces Ganoderma medical mushroom used in curing cancer and owns about 5 acres of nursed pineapple.
