The Adentan Municipal Assembly (AdMA) has honoured 12 farmers for their tremendous work in Agri-business farming at the 36th farmers’ day celebration organized by the Assembly at Ogbojo Presbyterian Park in the Greater Accra Region.
This year’s farmers’ day celebration organized by the municipality was on the theme: “Ensuring Agribusiness development under COVID-19, Opportunities and Challenges.”
Addressing the celebrants, the Chief Executive of Adentan Municipal Assembly, Alexander Nii- Noi Adumuah, highlighted the need to support farmers to grow more crops that would ensure food safety, security and quality production in the country.
The Chief Executive for Adentan Municipal Assembly Nii Noi Adumuah, said agriculture has brought about numerous benefits to the area, saying, “The agribusiness, so far, has also improved nutrition and increased mobility of people.”
He noted that the agribusiness sector has sustained more than half of the nation’s labor as smallholder farmers.
“With the aid of the European Union programme, about 3000 residents have been trained in mushroom production and 35 of them supported with start-up loans,” he added.
He also said, “About 35 households have been supported with 350 cockerels under the rearing for food and jobs programme and planted about 150 coconuts and 200 mangoes seedlings purposely for some households and institutions within communities.”
The Chief Executive indicated that the government has supported farmers in the Planting for Food and Jobs, Rearing for Food and Jobs, Agriculture Mechanization module and 1D1F programme.
He pledged the Assembly’s continued support to farmers would ensure food quality, security and safety in the municipality.
Dr Akwasi Bonso, Senior lecturer at the University of Ghana advised farmers to build trust with customers because that would ensure good relationships, adding that, “do not leave out the principles of fairness in dealing with buyers but be firm.”
Mr Adam Azomyan was adjudged the Overall Best Farmer for his outstanding performance in agribusiness. For his prize, he received a tricycle and farm equipment.
Other farmers also received various awards in different categories that included best youth farmer and best physically challenged farmer awards.
