The Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) has embarked on a two-day monitoring exercise in the Adentan Municipality to assess road infrastructure projects.
The exercise was also used to engage a broad section of community members on issues relating to development and public accountability.
It formed part of PIAC’s mandate to promote transparency and accountability in the management of Ghana’s petroleum revenues. Established in 2011, the Committee plays an important role in monitoring the use and management of petroleum revenues for the benefit of the public.
The initial day of the exercise involved an inspection of selected road projects within the municipality, including roads and bridges at New Legon and the upgrading of roads around the Islamic University area.
Under the inspection exercise, the Committee assessed the state of the road infrastructure and verified information on the projects as part of its monitoring activities.
On the final day, PIAC held an open forum with residents to discuss matters relating to public infrastructure, development, and accountability.
The public engagement began with a presentation by the PIAC Chairman, Mr. Richard Ellimah, who explained the Committee’s mandate and the importance of public participation in promoting transparency and accountability in the management of national resources.
During the forum, community members shared their concerns, asked questions, and sought clarification on matters affecting their communities. The interaction also firmed up collaboration between PIAC, the Assembly, traditional authorities, and residents in ensuring that development projects catered for the needs of the people.
Dignitaries and stakeholders present included Nii Kommey Apkor, Chief of Frafraha; Emmanuel Sackey, Honourable Assembly Member for the Manmomo Electoral Area; and Chief Alhaji Muflao, Chief of New Legon, representing Adentan Congo and the tribal chiefs.
Also in attendance was Gifty Coleman, Superintendent and Second-in-Command (2IC) of the Adentan Police Command. Members of PIAC present included Professor Peter Quartey, Ms. Sean Dake, and Freda Stephanie Frimpong, Esq.
Thus far, the exercise emphasized the importance of effective monitoring, public engagement, and stakeholder collaboration in ensuring that development projects are implemented in harmony with their intended objectives and deliver the expected benefits to communities.
It further highlighted the need for sustained cooperation among public institutions, traditional leaders, community members, and other stakeholders to promote responsible resource management and inclusive development.
The Adentan Municipal Assembly places greater premium on such monitoring exercises in strengthening accountability, improving infrastructure delivery, and ensuring that the needs and concerns of the people are in sink with the municipality’s development agenda.
