The Vice President of the republic of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has commissioned a FIFA-standard astro turf at Adjiringanor in the Adentan municipality.
The world class facility which was constructed by Wembley Sports Constructions Company and funded by the Ghana Gas Limited aims to enhance participation in sports activities at the local level as well as serve as a platform to unearth more talents for national leagues and national teams.
Addressing the gathering at the ceremony held on Thursday, June 10, 2021, Dr, Bawumia indicated that the commissioning of the edifice was in fulfilment of President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo’s promise to bring modern sports infrastructure to the community, district, regional and national levels.
He said, the Akuffo Addo government at the regional level, was building 10 multi-purpose stadia in all the 10 old regions in the country and would soon be commissioned when the final stage of work was completed.
Additionally: “Government has initiated moves to build six more stadia in the 6 newly created regions to ensure that each region has at least one ultra-modern and a multi-purpose sports stadium for high level sports activities,” said Dr. Bawumia.
He said the NPP government had also in the past 4years invested heavily in the rehabilitation of Ghana’s national stadia at the national level, citing the Accra gulf course, the Alihu Mahama sports stadium in Tamale, the soon-to-be-completed Baba Yara sports stadium in Kumasi and the on-going works at the Essipong stadium in Sekondi-Takoradi as examples.
He stated that: “The remarkable spread of astro turf around the country in 4years under the government of Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo is a clear departure from what pertained before we took office in 2017. Before then, there were only 2 public astro turfs in the entire country. Over the last 4years over 54 astro turf have been constructed accross the country by government with funding from various government agencies such as; Ghana Gas, GNPC, ZOOMLION, Zongo Development Fund and so on.”
In his closing remarks, the Vice President urged both the users and managers of the facility to ensure that the facility was well maintained to stand the test of time.
The phase 2 of the project would see the construction of about 3,000 human capacity spectator stands.
