The Adentan Municipal Guards on Friday 31st January 2025 arrested four {4} persons at about 5:am to enforce the By- Laws on open defecation and indiscriminate deposal   of refuse and burning of refuse at prohibited places These arrested persons were brought to the Assembly for interrogations.

The arrest called for an emergency meeting because the Municipality recorded some cases of deadly cholera outbreak with a recorded number of five persons receiving treatment at various health centers within Adentan.

The Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD) Ms. Ofosu Sarpong opened the meeting with a firm but compassionate tone, reminding everyone of the vital importance of maintaining public hygiene. “Our goal here is not just punishment,” she said, “but to help understand the consequences of these actions’’ she said, addressing the offenders directly Ms. Sarpong urged the offenders to reconsider their actions, stressing that improper waste disposal and unsanitary habits can contribute to the outbreak of serious diseases such as malaria and cholera. “Your actions not only harm the environment but also put public health at risk,” Ms. Sarpong stressed. “We must take responsibility for our surroundings and ensure that we do the right thing to protect ourselves and other’’ she added.

The offenders were remorseful after their charges were read to them and they are to pay a fine as penalty. “The fines are meant to serve as a deterrent, and to remind you that we must all contribute to keeping our community clean. The penalties may be harsh, but they are necessary for the greater good.” She added

The MCD emphases the need for everyone to adhere to the rules for the common good of all, warning that they would be made examples to deter others from engaging in similar behavior. “We will deal with you as scapegoats to set a strong precedent for the rest of the community,” Public hygiene is not a matter to take lightly. When you throw refuse in unauthorized place or defecate in the open, you’re putting everyone’s health at risk. Our duty as the Municipal Authority is to ensure this stops. “She added.

Mr. Andrew Nii Apai Aborhey the Head of Environmental Health, took the opportunity to educate them on the impact of such actions on the environment and public health. “We have already seen cases of cholera here in the Adentan Municipality The people who engage in such reckless behavior make it difficult for us to contain the spread of these diseases,” he explained, He urged the offenders to reflect on the harm they have caused to themselves and their neighbors.

“I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Municipal Guards who made these arrests,” she said. “Your diligence is helping to ensure that we do not let our city fall into further disarray.”

“Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” she said with conviction. “It is our collective responsibility to keep our environment clean and safe. Let’s work together to create a healthier, safer place for everyone.” As the meeting came to a close, the offenders left with a clearer understanding of the consequences of their actions and promise to change their ways.
