The Sutsurunaa Zonal Council of the Adentan Municipal Assembly, together with the Adjiriganor Assembly Member, Hon. Thompson, and Unit Committee Members have organised a community clean-up exercise in Beijing Township within the Adjiriganor Community in Accra.
The massive exercise, which ran from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, brought together approximately fifty residents and twenty staff of the Zonal Council in a coordinated effort to improve environmental sanitation.
Participants engaged in weeding, sweeping, desilting of blocked gutters and drains, clearing of refuse, and limited sanitation enforcement. Sand and silt removed from the drains were reused to level sections of community roads, while other waste was collected by a GARID compactor that reached full capacity.
Notices were also issued to households without toilet facilities and to one premises found using an insanitary toilet.
Apart from physical work, the exercise provided an opportunity for public education on personal hygiene, environmental health, and the need for regular monthly clean-ups.
Residents expressed satisfaction with the visible improvements, noting that major drains had been cleared and conditions associated with odour, mosquito breeding, and illegal dumping had been addressed.
The exercise marked the first publicly coordinated clean-up of its kind in the township and demonstrated the value of collaboration between local government structures and the community. Regular monthly exercises, stronger mobilisation, and essential tools will be relevant to maintaining the gains achieved and to keep the area clean.
