https://adma.gov.gh/2022/12/21/adma-road-safety-management-committee-sensitizes-transport-operators-on-road-safety/#respondWed, 21 Dec 2022 09:29:03 +0000https://adma.gov.gh/?p=2236The Adentan Municipal Assembly Road Safety Management Committee in collaboration with the Public Relations and Complaints education team, Ghana National Roads and Safety Authority (GNRS) and the Ghana Police Service have held a sensitization program to educate transport operators within the Municipality on road safety on Tuesday 20th December,2022 at Ashaley Botwe Lorry Station.
This is an annual event organized to remind transport operators and the public on the importance of being cautious on the road in order to prevent and reduce the occurrences of road accidents.
Mr. Felix Owusu from GNRS who led his team to educate the transport operators. He said many factors might contribute to road accidents but majority of the blame lies on the three persons that use the road thus the driver or rider, pedestrians and the passengers. This he said is due to the fact that most people ignore the road safety signs when using the road which is a bad and a dangerous thing to do and must be stopped.
Mr. Owusu further took the transport operators through the road safety signs and tested their knowledge on what they mean when it is seen on the road.
In addition, DSP Mabel Tetteh from the Adentan Motor, Traffic and Transport Department (MTTU) also urged and cautioned the transport operators to make sure they have their license with them at all times before setting off on the road.
According to her, it is the most important thing every driver must have since it is strongly backed by the law and can put one in trouble when caught by the police without it.
“License is a crucial thing when it comes to driving hence it must be worked on or done by the appropriate authorities thus the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA)”, she said.
The Municipal Information Officer, Nii adotey Saka, a member of Public Relations and Complaints Committee(PRCC) education team explained to the transport operators that, the assembly as the administrative head in the municipality in terms of management of road usage as well as commuters’ protection unit.

The exercised saw lot of vehicle tyres, plastic waste, organic waste and sand being removed from the drains.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Honorable D.A Nii Noi Adumuah, expressed his disappointment in the nature of debris removed and commended the team for a good work done.
Ritz Junction’s Drivers Union Chairman, Mr. Robert Medie assured the MCE of ensuring some amount of vigilance to prevent disposal of refuse into the drains.
Also Present at the Exercise were the Municipal Works engineer, Mr. Emmanuel K Salifu Asubey, an Information Officer from the Assembly and some staff from the Department of Urban Roads.

The exercise was held to equip drivers and other road users with basic knowledge on vehicle maintenance and how to acquire genuine parts, behaviors on the road towards other road users, obeying road signs and markings and finally maintaining a traffic free road.
The Municipal Urban Roads Engineer, Mr. Emmanuel Salifu Asubey updated participants on the construction of some new roads, its current state and how best road users can use the roads.
Some key issues that were raised by drivers and road users were addressed accordingly by authorities includes, traffic control measures, visible road signs, pedestrian crossing precautions and good driving practices.
However, the Adenta transport cooperative chairman raised an issue about the development of the station. According to him, the Assembly promised to build a modern facility which includes stores and offices for them which is yet to see the face of light. Addressing this issue, the municipal transport officer (MTO), Mr. Suley Mohammed and urban roads engineer Mr. Salifu Asubey assured them that measures are being put in place by the Assembly towards the commencement of the project. and in no time, work will begin.
The event had the likes of some resource personnel which includes officials from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Mr. Leo Sam the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bensam vehicle testing and road worthy center and Chief Inspector (C/INSPR.) Asare of the Motor, Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service (GPS)-Adenta divisional command.
